#WakeUpWednesday #TMG – #Fabric Fights Back

Last week our  #WakeUpWednesday post highlighted how nightclub venues have taken a hit due to local government regulations, specifically London-based nightclub Fabric.  Recently, Fabric was forced to close indefinitely, but the latest news shows a glimmer of what may be a step in the right direction for this industry wide struggle.

On October 4th, Fabric released a statement announcing that their appeal will be heard on November 28th at the Highbury Magistrates Court.  The appeal is an attempt by the club to reopen the doors following the Islington City Council’s decision to deny the re-issuance of the club’s operating license. Many have speculated that this decision was heavily influenced by real estate development in the area and supporters have urged government officials to intervene, including London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, who has vowed to support the city clubs and music/theater venues.

Shortly after their closure, a public donation fund was launched to fight these “archaic licensing laws” and the #SaveOurCulture campaign has since raised £271,290 to support the club’s legal fees. The initiative has received tremendous support by promoters, venues, magazines, blogs, ravers and iconic artists including Ricardo Villalobos, Seth Troxler, Nina Kravis, Rødhåd, Ben Klock and more. In fact, many venues and artists have shown support by organizing showcases and special performances as a benefit event with hopes to further strengthen the #SaveOurCulture cause!

Developments in the case will be reported as the venue prepares to enter this legal battle. With this being in the public eye, Fabric has the opportunity to potentially set a legal precedence for others to follow.
