Mike Saint-Jules Returns to Dreamstate Q&A

With Dreamstate around the corner, we sat down with TMG artist & New York native Mike Saint-Jules to discuss his upcoming performance at the first standalone East Coast Dreamstate event!

feature friday dreamstatenyartistsQ: You performed at the Dreamstate stage at EDC NY this past May! How would you describe your experience as the first artist to perform at Dreamstate on the East Coast?

A: Being the first Artist to start the stage off has its responsibilities. Sometimes you can’t help but to start things with ease and then eventually launch into the peak time stuff if you’re the first one to open. Especially in a one hour timeframe. It’s quite hard to pull it off depending on the event. Thankfully, I felt like I did great and the crowd was definitely letting me know that. It was a great experience to witness all of those people there to see my set. Very happy with the results!

Q: The Dreamstate brand is quickly developing with dates on both the east and west coast! Prior to this, we only really saw trance artists in major festival line ups, but now with a genre specific festival, how do you see the trance landscape changing? How do you see the trance community is taking the focus on trance specific events?

A: I think Insomniac is taking things in the right direction. The fans of the Trance genre are very passionate. We always want all the major festivals have a variety of styles of music. That’s what makes things so special, the diversity of it all. The Trance genre definitely needs to shine here in the States. Dreamstate is going to show everyone that Trance has never left and that it has a sound that brings a lot of people together under one place.

Q: In both Dreamstate line ups you’ve been a part of, you were playing alongside some major trance acts! What’s been some shareable highlights of working with these big names?

A: It’s a great feeling to be sharing the stage with many amazing names. Artists from Ferry Corsten to Infected Mushroom is something not many could say they have been a part of sharing the stage with. Ferry and I have a long history, and it’s always a pleasure to work with him. He signed my very first release on his label Flashover Recordings. To me this supersedes a lot of my personal highlights just because his faith in my sound has gotten me into starting this crazy journey.

Q: Dreamstate has been known to reach some pretty high BPMs throughout the festival! How do you plan your sets and prepare for this performance? What styles and artists inspire you?

A: Usually, I look at the newest tracks in my collection and just work through Rekordbox to see what tracks I will play in my playlist. Most of the time I’m going on the fly, but the first couple of tracks I have an idea as to what to play in a row. I’m used to playing high tempo tracks, so that’s never an issue. I also always like to add classic tracks into the mix. Tracks that have inspired me and paved the way for many Artists. It’s the reason why and how we’re here in the first place. So I always like to give that nod to the old classics.

A big ‘thank you’ to Mike Saint-Jules for speaking with us! We are excited to see your performance at the Brooklyn Hangar August 26th-27th!  Tickets are still available here: goo.gl/CILCsC
